YZF-R1 2007 Version

YZF-R1 model

Construction Notes

I came across a considerable number of errors in the model, many more than in previous ones from Yamaha. They range from trivial to quite serious - here they are in increasing order of significance.

Assembly Instructions

The assembly diagram for Section H, Rear Suspension,is labelled "Sheet C".

On the final assembly page, item 6 reads "Glue the taillight to the seat cowl". The tail light does not attach to the seat cowl, but to "frame 2", and should probably be attached after items 7 and 8.

Part Misnumbering

Parts G3, G5 and G7 make up the left-hand rear indicator light, and G4, G6 and G8 the right-hand one. In the assembly instructions they are shown the other way round. In the rest of the model left-hand side assemblies generally have odd numbers, and right-hand side ones even numbers, so in this case the parts sheet is probably right, and the assembly diagram wrong.

Parts J9 is the right-hand carburettor, and J10 the left, but they are shown the opposite way round in the assembly diagram. For consistency, the assembly diagram should be right, and the part sheet wrong.

Incorrect Colours

In numerous cases, some parts are a significantly darker grey than their neighbours, or some faces of individual parts are darker than others. This is perhaps a hangover from a development version where everything was darker than in the final version.

Examples of whole parts are C5 and C6, and J35, J36, J44 and J47. Parts where internal inconsistencies do not appear to be justified are B23, C19, C20 and C21, I2, and O2, O3, O4, O5 and O6.

Piping Errors

The lower end of part J38 bulges slightly at the central red locating mark, while the top of part J39 has a similar-shaped depression. Fitting them together gives a straight tube, rather than the slight bend which is surely intended. The top of J39 should bulge in the centre. The same applies to J46 and J47.

YZF-R1 Cooling Pipe Problem

Part J44 (which ends up nearly vertical) shows a 120 degree phase difference between the bulges at top and bottom, whereas to fit properly, the angle needs to be close to 90 degrees. The photo shows the original pipe (colour corrected - see above) next to the corrected version.

Wheel Spokes

The spokes for both wheels were too long, and incorrectly shaped at both inner and outer ends. See the construction page for details.
